I am very pleased that the Senate has confirmed Vice Admiral Harvey E. Johnson, Jr. to be Deputy Administrator of the department's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). Harvey will serve as FEMA's Chief Operating Officer.

Following a distinguished 30 year career in the United States Coast Guard, Admiral Johnson joined FEMA in April 2006 and has worked as the right hand to Administrator David Paulison in building a new FEMA in the aftermath of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Thanks to his tireless dedication and leadership, FEMA is a greatly improved agency as demonstrated by its response to the California wildfires last year and this summer's devastating floods in the Midwest.

I am grateful for Admiral Johnson's service to our homeland and congratulate him on this well deserved confirmation.
